The human body is made of different systems, cells, veins and arteries. Without these elements, our body will not function normally. Even though all of them are very essential, the circulatory system with its main organ, the heart, plays a very important role in our lives.
The circulatory system is made up of many large and small blood vessels that distribute blood all throughout our body. These blood vessels include arteries and veins that help make the heart functions plausible. Due to the importance of heart to the human body, it is reasonable that the biggest artery is found there. Nonetheless, which artery is the largest and why?
Before that, let us briefly introduce, artery. An artery carries blood away from the heart. Additionally, there are two kinds of arteries, pulmonary and systemic. As its name imply, pulmonary arteries transport blood from the blood to the lungs for oxygenation. Meanwhile, systemic arteries distribute the blood to the body.
Going back to the question, which artery is the largest and why, the answer would be the aorta. It is the primary systemic artery that pumps oxygenated blood. Shortly thereafter, the aorta will transport oxygenated blood away from the heart, then, distribute to every parts of the body. Since the blood that aorta supplies is high in oxygen content, the blood color is red.
Anatomically, this artery is adjoined to the left ventricle of the heart. The aorta contracts strongly to push the blood out from the heart. Further, the aorta has three layers of tissue, the smooth inner layer, thin outer layer and middle layer. This artery branches out to smaller arteries, ascending aorta and descending aorta. The ascending aorta supplies blood to the head region and arms. Likewise, descending aorta distribute blood to lower parts of the body.
The aorta held the honor of being the largest artery because its function and responsibility to the human body are also enormous. It has to be big in order to supply the whole body system with blood simultaneously. Moreover, aorta is an elastic organ that made it possible to stretch, thus, aid in maintaining the blood pressure.
On the flipside, this large blood vessel must be healthy all time in order for the continuous blood supply to the body. In addition, health conditions may arise from the aorta such as aortic stenosis, and abdominal aortic aneurysm. These conditions are serious and fatal that may lead to death.
