There are many different helicopters. You see helicopters used by the military, politicians, media, rescuers, and rich private civilians. Well that is mainly because helicopters, or choppers as some may call, are very much versatile when it comes to their functions. Helicopters are easy to maneuver in tight locations. You can take off and land a helicopter without the need of too much space. You don’t need a runway so your helicopter could fly. You can also easily move to the left, right, front, and back. You can fly a helicopter in remote places where there are no roads or bridges to reach the place. And this is why most rescue missions are done with the use of a helicopter.
However, as much as the helicopter is versatile, it lacks speed. Helicopters don’t fly as fast as airplanes do. Yet with the emerging technologies and the continued need for speed, man is now able to create fast helicopters. They are still no match for the speed of most airplanes but they sure have improved compared to their predecessors. Now, you might be wondering, what is the fastest helicopter in the world? Well, read on to find out.
The fastest helicopter, officially, is the Westland Lynx ZB500. It has the speed of 400.89 km/h (249.1 mph). However, last August 2010, a Sikorsky X2 unofficially broke the Westland Lynx’s record. The Sikorsky X2 was clocked at 435 km/h (270.3 mph). The Sikorsky now holds the record for the fastest helicopter in the world.
The Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., located in Stratford, Connecticut, first thought of building a helicopter that could go up to 480 km/h. Now, almost 40 years after, Sikorsky is near their goal. With their X2, they have unofficially bagged the title for the fastest helicopter in the world. And on September 15, 2010, they took the Sikorsky X2 for another test flight. This time they reached 463 km/h (287 mph). According to the engineers at Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., the speed of the X2 was only limited by the power supply and not by the helicopter’s overall load and vibrations which were initially the issue with the first testing. The Sikorsky still has some hurdles to get over with in order for X2 to be officially recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) as the fastest helicopter in the world. But the future looks bright for the helicopter world, especially at Sikorsky.
So what is the fastest helicopter in the world? Officially, it is the Westland Lynx ZB500. Unofficially, the Sikorsky X2 holds the record.
