What is the Difference between Dual Core and Core 2 Duo?

Intel is considered to be one of the largest corporations in the entire world. This is an American global technology company that is known to be the largest semiconductor chip producer based on profit. Intel is the known creator of many electronics such as the x86 series of microprocessors, which are the processors mostly found in personal computers. This company was founded on the 18th of July, 1968 in Santa Clara California wherein the name Intel was derived from the words Integrated Electronics. These days, the Intel Corporation is recognized to be the top makers of motherboard chipsets, network interface controllers, integrated circuits, graphic chips, flash memory, embedded processors and a lot more devices associated with communications and computers. Two of the most common products of Intel are none other than the Dual Core and the Core 2 Duo. Both are classified as processors; however, there are still some noticeable distinctions between the two. So what is the difference between dual core and core 2 duo?

What is the dual core? Dual core are processors that contain 2 cores in a single silicon chip. Core 2 duo, on the other hand is the brand or name given by Intel to the second batch of dual core processors. In other words, the core 2 duo is the improvised version of the dual core. Nowadays, consumers are always looking for the better or the more advance product or technology. One defining characteristic of a good processor is its speed. This is why many believe that the faster the product is, the better the results will be making it a lot more appealing to the consumers. This has been a challenge not just for Intel, but as well as for all the corporations and companies that produces microprocessors. This led to the idea of Intel in adding more cores into a single silicon chip in order to increase or boost the performance once supported by the OS.

As we all know, two is always better than, which is also very applicable in microprocessors since the more cores are used, the better the outcome will be. Just like in core 2 duo, the 2 cores used works independently from each other. Because of this, it elevates the capacity of the processor to do multi-tasking, which is evident in the core 2 duo. All processors that contain 2 cores are collectively classified as dual core (including the second batch version, core 2 duo), while the processors that consists of 4 cores are classified as quad core.

When Intel first invented their dual core processors, it was called as Core Duo. This obviously shows the use of 2 cores. These dual core processors of Intel were simply 2 Pentium 3 processors that are made up in a single chip. However, as Intel decided to improvise their product more, they have come up with a good result, which they differentiate from the old model by naming it as Core 2 Duo. This shows that this version is the second of two models. Just like in movies, the sequel is always called as part 2.

In other words, the main difference between the dual core processors and the core 2 duo processors are mainly just in semantics since the core 2 duo is given only to give it its distinction from the previous batch of processors under the dual core classification. In other words, we can associate this by tagging Core Duo as Pentium 1 and Core 2 Duo as Pentium 2.

In Summary, dual core is the given generic name by Intel to their processors that contain 2 cores on a single silicon chip. The Core 2 Duo is considered as the second line of models or versions of the original dual core processors. Another common type of dual core processors aside from the Core 2 Duo and the Core Duo is the X2 series from AMD. In simple logic, all Core 2 Duo are Dual Core, but not all Dual Core processors can be classified as Core 2 Duo.
