What is the Difference between an Atom and a Molecule?

Everything in this world is made out from small particles that we cannot grasp. It may be confusing learning about Chemistry facts and definitions but we must admit that the basic building blocks of what we have here on earth are comprised from atoms and molecules that we cannot appreciate through our naked eyes. That is why we need special devices such as powerful microscopes to witness the wonders of these minute compositions.

When we have listened attentively all throughout our lessons in Chemistry, then we would have known what is the difference between an atom and a molecule. What are the distinctions of these two terms? We are about to unravel some facts about their differences and hopefully this time, we get to remember what we are about to learn for future references.

As aforementioned, what we have on earth are made from minute particles. These particles are known as atoms and are considered the basic unit of matter. Atoms are the smallest particle in an element and are composed of protons, neutrons and electrons. The first two comprise the nucleus and is surrounded by electrons. Positively charged particles are the protons and the negatively charged particles are the neutrons.

From past theories, atoms are said to be indivisible as they exist independently but further studies have claimed that atoms are possible to be divided but no longer retains its previous properties. What is impressive about atoms is that they are present in all things and when two or more atoms are bonded together, a molecule comes in existence.

Molecules flourish because of combination of two or more atoms and are held together by covalent chemical bonds. Because they are made out from individual atoms, they can also be divided further. To illustrate an example, when two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom are fused, the water element comes in existence. The same goes when atoms are grouped together to form various elements.

Molecule is popular when talking about its properties. We have learned that molecules are arranged depending on the composition and density of objects and this is further appreciated through solid, liquid and gas. Solid molecules are packed very closely to each other that any movement is hard to exist. Liquid molecules are packed slightly loose but particles are maintained to be close to each other. With gas, molecules can freely move as they are loosely packed.

Despite of their distinctions, atoms and molecules are considered both an important part of this world because without their presence, nothing is formed here on earth.
