What is the Biggest Rabbit in the World?

Rabbits, we associate these furry little friends with the Easter Bunny and the highly popular carrot-eating cartoon character, Bugs Bunny. Rabbits are just great. They are adorable little creatures. Many would love a rabbit as a pet. They are easy to take care of and are quite cuddly even. However, not all rabbits are cuddly, or rather, little in a sense.

There are some breeds of rabbits called giants for the very reason of their huge size which leaves many people wondering, “What is the biggest rabbit in the world?”

There are many contenders for the title of the biggest rabbit breed. There are some rabbit breeds that are slightly smaller than the others but have specific, individual rabbits that grow bigger than those other breeds. So, it is quite difficult to tell the exact answer to this.

The rabbit that holds the Guinness World Record for the biggest rabbit is Darius, a Continental Giant. Darius is over 4 feet long and weighs around 49 pounds. Darius is humongous even for a Continental Giant. Usually, you would assume that the Continental Giants are the biggest rabbit breed because the largest rabbit in the world is one of them. But this is not entirely true. Most Continental Giants are 2 to 3 feet long and weigh up to 16 pounds. Darius is an oversized Continental Giant.

There are other rabbit breeds that have average weight larger than the Continental Giant. One is the Flemish Giant. Flemish Giant originated in Belgium just like the Continental Giant. This rabbit breed is the descendant of the now-extinct European Patagonian breed. The average weight of a Flemish Giant is around 11 to 13 pounds. Yet there are Flemish Giants known to have reached around 20 to 30 pounds. This breed of rabbits actually doesn’t have a maximum weight. So don’t be surprised if you see Flemish Giants reaching 30 pounds or more.

Another giant rabbit breed is the Checkered Giant. Checkered Giants actually sprang from Flemish Giants. So it is of no surprise that these huge rabbits are about of the same weight as the Flemish Giants. Checkered Giants weigh in at least 11 pounds. And just like the Flemish, they don’t have known maximum weights as well.

What is the biggest rabbit breed in the world? I would have to say that it’s a tie between the Flemish Giant and the Checkered Giant. Both of these breeds are recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association to have no maximum limit. These rabbits sure are not those cuddly little bunnies we’d love to keep in our gardens.
