“Buy 1 Take 1”
These are familiar signs you see when you go to a mall. And it is with these signs that people start to flock over the many different stalls and stores around. But even without these mall-wide sales, people will still continue to go to shopping malls.
Today, malls are not only for shopping. Malls have various things to keep mall-goers coming. Other than stores, there are markets, restaurants, cafés, arcades, bowling lanes, theatres, salons, and even ice skating rinks and clinics. Malls almost have everything you need from banks and ATMs to repair shops and various service centers. When you are in a mall, you can shop for clothes or books, eat heavy meals or some light snacks, play games, watch movies, or just simply relax and enjoy the cool interior. Whatever the reason is, people like going to malls. And they will continue to do so. And it is for this very reason that malls just keep popping up and getting bigger. So, what is the biggest mall in the world?
There are 2 biggest malls in the world. One in terms of gross leasable area and the other is of land area. The New South China Mall, formerly South China Mall, is the biggest mall in terms of the gross leasable area. It has over 600,000 m2 of gross leasable area and over 890,000 m2 of land area. Unfortunately, this massive mall is not well appreciated by the people of Dongguan, China. About 99% of the total stores of the New South China Mall are unoccupied by retailers. This lack of tenants is mainly due to the mall’s location. The New South China Mall is located in the suburbs of Dongguan where it is only accessible via private vehicles and buses. And there are no highways adjacent to the mall. These make the mall unreachable to many of the residents of Dongguan.
What is the biggest mall in the world in terms of land area? It is the Dubai Mall with over 1,124,000 m2 of land area and 350,000 m2 of gross leasable area. This mall is much more fortunate than the New South China Mall. The Dubai Mall has over 1200 stores. When it opened on the 4th of November, 2008, it opened along with 600 retailers making it the retail history’s largest mall opening. The mall includes an aquarium and a skating rink along with an indoor theme park called SEGA Republic.
It’s sad that the world’s biggest mall in terms of gross leasable area is not being put to its full extent. But for shopaholics and mall-lovers, it will still be a trip worth having.
