We already know that our solar system is made up of nine planets namely Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto (arranged according to their distance nearest to the sun). Each of these planets varies in size and color. The distances between each planet are also not similar from each other. This likewise depends on how fast a particular planet revolves around the sun as well as its size. Most of us may have already known these simple facts about the different planets of the solar system. However, only a few of us have any idea of what each of these planets is composed of. So in order for us to add more knowledge about these heavenly bodies, let us try to discuss what are planets made of.
Let us first start with Mercury. Mercury is made up mostly of dense iron core and silicate crust and mantle. As expected, Mercury has no atmosphere since it is very close to the sun, which has a temperature that is very high. Nest to Mercury is Venus. Many experts believe that Venus is made up of nickel and iron as its main core. This assumption may not have been proven yet with solid facts; however it is already sure that the gas found in this planet is made up of carbon dioxide. Following Venus is none other than our home, the planet Earth. Earth is also composed of iron; nevertheless 30% of it is found in the core. Aside from this, 21% of the earth’s atmosphere is made of oxygen and approximately three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is covered with water. Next to earth is the fourth planet from the sun, which is Mars. Mars is similar to the first three planets. It is likewise composed of iron and its core is also composed of sulfur and silicate mantle.
Now that we know the first four planets, let us now tackle the largest of all planets which is Jupiter. Jupiter is unlike any of the first four planets. This is because Jupiter is made up mostly of a rocky core and is covered with thick liquid and metallic hydrogen. Its fractions are divided into 90% hydrogen and only 10 % helium. Following Jupiter is Saturn, which is also very similar. The only difference is that Saturn is a very hot planet, which radiates coming from the inside. Next is Uranus. Uranus is nothing like the two largest planets since it is made up mostly of rocks and ice. This is formed by the mixture of H2O and other gases like ammonia and methane. Approximately 83% of its atmosphere is made up of hydrogen. Neptune, on the other hand is very much similar to Uranus. This is because it is also made up of rocks and ice. However, only 15% of its atmosphere is hydrogen. Last but not the least, is Pluto. Although Pluto has been considered as the 9th planet for a lot of years, experts are now considering otherwise. This is the reason why there is still insufficient facts to support Pluto.
These are basically what the nine planets are made of. In summary, the first four planets are made up mostly of minerals and rock, while Jupiter and Saturn are considered as the gaseous planets and the remaining three are composed of ice and rocks.
