Is it good to drink a lot of water? Definitely! Drinking water has a number of important health benefits and it is a great idea to make the effort to drink lots of water regularly.

The human body is between 60 and 70% water. Every cell in our body contains water and water is essential to life on earth. Without water, we would die within a couple of days and we need regular water to maintain good health.

Most of us do not drink enough water, which can lead to dehydration. The problem is, by the time you feel thirsty, you are already partially dehydrated. The more active you are, the more water you need to drink, and if you have drunk a lot of alcohol, you will definitely need to replace the lost fluids. Headaches are a symptom of mild dehydration (and a hangover) and if your urine is dark, you need to drink more water.

If you are exercising heavily, you will lose lots of water through sweating, so it is important to drink plenty of water to replace the lost fluids. But is it good to drink a lot of water after exercise, or should you stick to energy drinks instead? Ideally you should drink both, but water is usually preferable, especially if you are exercising on a particularly hot day.

Is it good to drink a lot of water, or can we make do with tea and coffee? Tea and coffee are a diuretic, which means that they make your body lose fluids. It will not do you too much harm to have a few cups of tea or coffee as they are largely comprised of water, but you should try and make an effort to drink at least a litre and a half of fresh water per day for optimum benefit.

Drinking enough water can really make the difference to a weight loss program. If you drink some water every time you experience hunger pangs, you will find that the water takes the edge of your appetite and you should be able to avoid the temptation of eating more than your diet dictates.

If you struggle to drink enough water through a normal day, it can help to fill up a drink bottle up and keep it with you. Take little sips at regular intervals and before you know it, you will soon have drunk the entire bottle.

Not everyone likes the taste of plain water. It can sometimes taste bland and unappealing, especially if you are addicted to fizzy pop and soda. If you hate the taste of water, try adding some fresh lemon or lime juice to ice cold water and it will instantly taste more palatable.

However, whilst drinking plenty of water is undoubtedly good for you, drinking too much water can also have an adverse effect. It is possible to drink too much water and the condition is called hyponatremia, or dilution of the blood. Excessive water consumption causes water intoxication and can eventually lead to death, so always avoid drinking too much water!
