It commonly grows on high altitudes only, which is why it is commonly seen on mountains and hills. The blue spruce also grows along river banks and near streams since it prefers high moisture in the soil.
The blue spruce’s scientific name Picea pungens refers to its sharp and pointed needles. This type of tree is basically medium in size and can grow as high as 30 meters. Its trunk has a diameter of approximately 1.5 meters. Its bark is grayish in color with thin and narrow vertical creases. When it’s young, the crown is somewhat conic in appearance, but as it grows older, its crown turns cylindrical in shape. The leaves of the blue spruce are needle looking and are approximately 15 to 30 mm long. Its color falls under the dull shade of green and gray with a light mixture of blue. This is why it is called the blue spruce.
Aside from seeing this tree in America’s wilderness, the blue spruce can also become an ornamental tree. Some homeowners even try to use the blue spruce as a substitute for pine trees as their Christmas tree. Its wide branches are very useful for hanging Christmas designs and ornaments.
