Our heart is recognized as one of the most vital organs in our body. Our heart is the one that keeps the circulation of blood all throughout our body going. It is located on our thoracic cavity and is caged by our ribs including our lungs. This is because both of these organs are considered very essential to our second to second survival. First of all, what is resting heart rate? Resting heart rate is simply the rate of our heart beat or pulse during inactive or resting periods. This includes sitting down, lying on bed or basically just doing nothing. Aside from this, resting heart rates can be determined using different methods. We can in fact use cardiac monitors or other advanced equipment in order to get our exact heart rate during resting phase. Nevertheless, these things could only mean extra spending. So in case we are short in budget, we can still do the same thing without using these gadgets and all we need to have is our own fingers. Here are the steps in doing it.
Since we are trying to get the resting rate of our heart, it is ideal that we lie down for a while or take a seat for at least 15 to 20 minutes. This will give enough time for the heart to adjust to its resting rate. This is a must especially if we came from a very rigorous activity such as running, walking or even cleaning the house. Getting the heart rate right after these activities will alter the results since it will produce a higher number, which is definitely not the resting heart rate that we want.
As soon as we are already well rested, we can now start placing our pointer finger and middle finger together on the underside of our wrist. There are actually a lot of sites in our body, aside from the wrists, that have pulses where we could choose from. We could get it from our carotids in the neck, our brachial artery in our arm folds or even our pedal pulses in our feet. We can also get the resting rate directly on our heart. This, however, is now called our cardiac rate instead of the pulse rate. So in case we are using the wrist, we can locate the artery found on the base of our thumbs. All we have to do is to place the two fingers on top of this artery and count the pulses within a minute. It is a must that these two fingers are used and not the thumb since the thumb also has its own pulse. Using this might alter our counting thus giving us a false result. This is the simplest way of knowing our resting heart rate without the use of any expensive gadgets or equipment.
