How Long does Ringworm Last?

Ringworm is a nasty type of skin infection, which is caused by a fungus that attacks the scalp and the different external parts of our body. This type of infection is also considered very contagious and can be passed on from one person to another in just a short time. Its mode of transmission is through direct contact of to a contaminated person or pet as well as contaminated body objects such as combs, brushes or body towels. Nevertheless, ringworms are still very manageable.

How long does ringworm last? Ringworms can incubate for about 4 to 10 days prior to appearing on the body skin and 10 to 14 days prior to its appearance on the scalp. The incubation period will usually start right after the direct contamination. This infection will usually produce scaly, red and itchy patches on the skin; however, these symptoms will fade away after being treated for a few weeks. The ringworm per se will, unfortunately, take longer before finally getting rid of it.

What is great about treating ringworms is that there is actually no need for any advice from the doctor. This means that self management is already enough to treat this infection. Ringworm will usually last within 4 weeks after it is treated with OTC medications or topical creams. If ringworm is left unmanaged or untreated, the infection could get worse, and the ringworm can last for several months or even a year. Aside from this, there are also some cases wherein ringworms are very hard to eliminate and can take more than a month to treat. If this happens, it is now advisable to have it checked with a licensed skin professional. Some ringworm can also develop into having pustules and discharges, which can also cause high temperature and fever.

This is the reason why we must always take care of our entire body. Hand washing and proper body hygiene and sanitation are a must in order to prevent the skin from being contaminated. This can be done by simply avoiding sharing of personal belongings such as towels, brushes and combs. It is also ideal to keep the skin healthy dry to prevent fungus from multiplying. In addition to this, getting a good immune system is very advisable to prevent easy affectation from the said infection. If I ask once again the same question that I asked in the beginning of this article, I’m pretty sure I’m correct with my expectation, no hand will not be raised.
