You have just given birth to a healthy baby. And everything is just how everyone tells you about motherhood. Yes, motherhood is an exciting stage and is such a joy. Yet we all know that it is a lot of work, the diaper changing, the tantrums, breastfeeding, and irregular sleep patterns among many others. And so it would be nice to be able to take a break and relax for a bit.
And all women want to be pampered at times and be able to dress up and look great. Nursing mothers are not exempted from this. Yet when you are nursing your baby, you can’t help but think first of the welfare of your child. And so, many mothers wonder, “Can I dye my hair while breastfeeding?”
Older mothers would most probably advise you against dyeing your hair. The chemicals in hair dyes can be harmful to you and your baby. And you wouldn’t want that to happen. Your health and your baby’s are your top priority as a mom. And these are the reasons why many mothers fear of dyeing their hair while breastfeeding and even while pregnant. But there is no need to fret about these when you are dyeing your hair.
Doctors are not actually against the thought of nursing mothers having their hair dyed because the truth is, it is perfectly safe. Only a small amount of the chemicals in the hair dye can actually enter your system through your scalp. So there is no danger in intoxicating your breast milk with having your hair dyed. And dye is known to be secreted out of your body through urinating. And so there is also no need to worry about it staying inside your body.
However, if you are still uncomfortable with dyeing all of your hair while you are breastfeeding your baby, you could try using a non-permanent dye instead or just do some streaking, frosting, highlighting, or painting instead. Doing these rather than having an over-all dye would lessen your exposure to the chemicals of the hair dye since the dye won’t touch your scalp.
If you are planning on dyeing your own hair, be sure to dye your hair in a well-ventilated area. The chemicals might not be absorbed by your scalp but you could end up getting intoxicated with the fumes. The fumes can make you nauseous and you wouldn’t want to feel sick when you have a baby to nurse. And be sure to use a pair of gloves so that you don’t get any hair dye on your hands.
So go on. Have your hair dyed. Relax, feel great and be that fabulous mama. And most importantly, enjoy every moment with your baby.
